    Thumbs up

Mate, it lasts a bare long time. It says on the DVLA paper thing i got with mine about when you pass your test you can give your license to the instructor to convert it but if it was issued before 04 you'll need a new photo or something. But yeah, a few people take longer than a year to pass so having a provisional last just a year would be idiotic.

Don't apply for your form online, apply for your license! You can even enter your passport details if you'd had a passport in like the last 5 years, and they automatically have your picture :|

Driving licence runs from date of commencement until you reach 65yrs of age. My lad got his first provisional on his 16th birthday last Saturday 11/10/2008 and his runs to 10/10/2062. You used to have to renew a motorcycle provisional every 2 years a long time ago, not any more. You do need to take a CBT every 2 years though if you're still a learner.

so, does anyone actually know the exact date/time frame?

    EDIT

    email to the DVLA

    Hi,

My name is Michael, and i'm looking at applying for my provisional driving license, but I have had problems finding out how long the license lasts. I am currently 16 (17 in july)but would like to apply for my provisional now for my own reasons. I have read that the license lasts for 10 years, but other places claim it lasts only 2? which is correct.

    THank You for your time

    Michael

As I say it runs until your 65th birthday. The only reason it does that is because the dvla want you to confirm on a new application that you can still meet the eyesight requirements when your 65.
To sum up your licence is valid to age 65 but to ride a motorbike you need to pass a CBT every 2 years unless you take and pass a bike practical test.
To drive a car you need to take a Theory test which again is valid for 2 years. If you dont take and pass the practical car test within 2 years you need to sit the theory again.

can you take the theory test before your 17? eg. 16 or do you have to be 17 to do it?

Not unless you're disabled as a person getting the higher rate of mobility allowance can legally get a licence and drive a car when they're 16 believe it or not. Perhaps you could have your legs taken off

I'm sure it lasts longer than 2 years.

I think it's valid until you're 70, although you will probably have to renew the photo every 10 years, just like a normal license.

I think the 2 year figure is coming from either how long you have to pass your practical test after passing your theory test, or how long you have to exchange your practical test pass certificate for your full driving license.

As those gaps are both 2 years (AFAIK), it would be silly for the provisional license to only be valid for 2 years also.

Silly me, tomcage9 is correct. Having now done the maths it's correct a licence is valid to age 70. The picture on the licence has to be updated every 10 years, that's all.
The confusion comes from years back when a provisional really did only last 2 years. In those days even if i had got a full car licence if I wanted to start riding a bike bigger than a moped I'd have needed a provisional bike licence as well as my car licence. These days you only have one licence for all classes of vehicle. It acts as a provisional for any class you haven't already passed the test for.

provisional does not last 2 years, poppycock.
Its the theory test that lasts 2 years and you have to pass your practicle within 2 years of passing your theory

Your provisional, just like a full license, has to be updated every 10 years.

Well according to the back of my provisional licence it says this...Valid from 22-09-2008, Valid to 21-09-2061
So I'm assuming 53 years :S so when I am 70 which is a lot more than 10 years.
If you are getting a moped at 16 you're CBT will only last for a year, which you will have to re-take at 17 and then it can last forever without L Plates.
Hope that helped any more Q's just ask cos I looked into this recently!

You can drive a 49cc moped at 16, and up to 125cc at 17+ with a CBT and L-plates. Beyond that you need to do lessons and pass your motorbike test... If you do the test on a 125cc bike then you can ride it without L-plates for 2 years and after that you can ride any bike or you can take the test on a bigger bike (500cc) and after passing you can drive any bike - but I think you have to be 21+ to do this.

    Quite confusing, actually
