I think you're supposed to but Ebuyer let you buy it on its own.

Yeah, i got mine on it's own, but technically it should be purchased with some form of hardware e.g. memory, GFX card, mobo etc.

You can buy the product alone without needing any components!

You can install OEM editions of Windows on ONE motherboard - this is strictly limited. If however you're motherboard failed or "failed" then you can phone activate just as easy.

Also if an OEM copy of Windows is not active for 6 month you can reactivate by internet for a second time on a completely different hardware configuration as i have discovered with mine

The only place you find people selling it with hardware is fleabay because otherwise they get taken down.

Yeah Home Premium is best value, unless you want Windows Media Centre, and want to use the full system backup and restore capabilities of Ultimate. Otherwise Ultimate is a little overkill!

IMO Ultimate doesn't warrant the price difference it has! I don't think it has enough features to make people go and buy it for nearly twice the price of Home Premium!

I don't agree that Business should cost more than Home Premium simply because neither is really better than the other, Business is more like the "professional" edition designed for businesses and users with larger networks etc, Home Premium is a more "fun" edition aimed at general users such as myself and Media Centre PC's.

exactly, Microsoft seemed to go mental with the XP editions too though i mean we now have: Home Edition, Pro, Pro x64, MCE, TPE, Starter Edition and the Embedded Edition!

Lets be honest, they should've just made a Home and Pro edition as they did to start with Vista, like they did origninally with XP and left it!

Rant over

Everytime you format.

There is no way for the old OS to check if you have wiped it!

When you format its auto, you just enter a code and the phone line will give you new code back (I think).

And no never say you just want to format, say you had a faulty HDD or Mobo.

Y are you formatting you os hard drive every few months? Surely it makes more sense to have an os running on a small (80gb) hdd and all your downloads on seperate drives that way you can reformat drives with no hassle as the os drive is having very little added removed to it and therefore has no need to be reformatted.
As for your question im pretty sure microsoft would tell you where to go if after 6 months you had reactivated an oem piece of software more than twice, they might decide to chase after you for piracy

Yes, cos if you do end up speaking to someone then they're not gonna know who you are. And also, you would generally get the automated phone system which generates you a code there and then!
