The Myguide 3100 is a great little machine, made even better now that I have followed the excellent tips posted by Gmcmen and others
I now have iGo 2006 (my current favourite), iGo v7, and TomTom 6 running on my machine.
Typically I can't leave well alone and am experimenting with iGo8 (2008).
I have downloaded the program file (and a mod to convert it from the demo version), and all the European mapping, POI etc. (about 1.5 Gb)
I have put all this on a fresh SD card with none of the other mods/updates on.
I have changed the ADDONS.TXT to:-

On restarting the machine it hangs for ages with the message GPSAPP CTOR but eventually gets going. The little bit of testing I've done it seems that the program is fully operational.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to prevent this unacceptable start-up delay?
Bad news is I can not get it to hang!
Good news is I have it working with no problems.
I tried a few things with sys.txt but it works ok.
Only difference I see in your sys.txt is under
[interface]
landscape=1 {I do not have this line}
although I added it in but it still worked and it loads in 16 secs from I press the button until the Nav menu screen.
If I was you now I would refresh the flash disk back to the original and try it again.
After playing with it the past few hours, I am getting to like it.
It has the features I was looking for,
Advanced planning and a list for favorites.

I copied the 'contents' folder from this PC version as a direct replacement for the 'contents' folder on the SD card. I was then able to start the Myguide with iGo8 with no problems. I have since added a few more map, POI, Language and Voice files and all still seems well.
Like you gmcmen, I like this version 8 a lot

Here is another thing to try, open sys.txt if you are using MyGuide software it is on the flash disk in the MyGuide folder,
add these lines, save and give it a try.

Thanks for advice GMCMEN, unfortunately, its still a no-go - I am wondering if my WIN CE is corrupted ie a driver or config for the internal GPS receiver/aerial..
Anyone had problems with the IGO screen dimming smart powersave? I never tried it before adding other apps so dont know if my fiddling has caused it to fail or if it never worked orginally.
Trying to change the backlight setting in control panel doesnt do anything either.

I have now successfully installed the Igo 2006 and the V7 software THANX to gmcmen /soak and you all for the prog' the down-load and all the info...nice one.
Just follow GMCMEN's instructions to the letter and it'll work.....

Yea, its V8 only. From reading above, i think getting V8 to work might be a little too complicated for me.
I'll try to get the igo from *151 working first. I think i've hit on a torrent that has all the map files to use with the igo from *151. Found it on sumotorrent in case anybody wants to know. It is 3.4gb in size, but has ALL the maps/voices, but i'll probably just copy the maps from that torrent and paste it into the igo from *151. The mapname is the same as the link in the zipfile so i suppose it'll work...
Hmm... i wonder if it'll work since the licence.db will be different.... arrrggghhhh

hello,
i am new and with this forum's help, i have installed tontom on my myguide.
which map version do i have to use as i need the western europe map.
i tried 3 different ones , but tomtom does not recognize them.
for example western_europe v6.75.
the maps which are running now are uk and ireland. the are also v6.75.
or do i need maps for a tomtom one or pda version, if there is a difference?

I've just got one of the TMC receivers from there (very fast delivery, came in 3 days!). How did you get it to work though because try as I might all I see in the TMC control center is "Testing...." and "no station name" for all frequencies (that's in iGO 2006).

To reply to my own question - by dint of a lot of driving around I've managed to get sporadic signals but never one lasting very long. The only time I get a signal for long enough to lock and receive TMC messages is when I have the aerial going through the sunroof and across the roof of the car!
Now - is there anyone who knows enough about these aerials to tell me if/how I can extend it so that it can be neatly lead into the roof lining?

The only time I've had a slow startup at that point was when I had added a large chunk of POI's - I found that it took a minute or two to load them all.

The missing BMP error might be bacuse it is tryingto use the wrong resolution or orientation and thus cannot find the bmp to match. I remember having the same error when trying to get igo8 working but typically I cannot recall the exact fix. This however is the SYS.TXT I use with it...

Further news on the TMC front. It seems there is only one spot where it works and thats just north of the M4 behind Osterly park :eek: I seem to remember that someone else also mentioned a spot on the M4 (given its constant jams and closures maybe its as well that TMC works on it). Even so it only works with the aerial outside the car and adjusted just so. Now, that's with iGO 2006 which tunes to Classic FM.
However - much better news with Destinator 7 using Heart FM. Using this program I get a signal much more easily even with the aerial inside the car! Modern technology or what :cool:
Mio and iGO 8 - no TMC at all so far - can't get them to see the hardware.
So where am I then:

Hate the maps which constantly sends me the wrong way up one way streets, suggests illegal right rurns and tries to route me through a shopping precinct that has been closed to cars for at least 6 years.
TMC very poor (though the display of TMC data is nicely handled).
LOVE the program itself - so flexible and intuitive that it is a complete joy to use (especially with "riks" skin).

Much better maps and routings
TMC works better at least in London
TTS works on a MyGuide
Really don't like the program itself all that much.
I'm supposed to be deciding which application I want to buy for the future - hmmm, not getting any easier!

I have recently read that the cause of the initial hanging on load-up of iGo8 on the Myguide 3100 that I experienced, could be due to the 'SpeedcamUpdates.spud' file in the 'content/speedcam' folder. Deleting or replacing this could be the simple answer to the 'hanging' problem.

That definately caused a problem for me soak, when I used SpeedcamUpdates.spud it took iGO 8 close to ten minutes to start up. It's not a hang as such its just verrrry verrrry veHerrry slow to load :)
I was told elsewhere that there is no "proper" way to get speed cams working in the demo version of 8.

For those of you running tomtom and who are having trouble getting it to fit on the screen correctly.
You need to edit the file ttnavigator.bif, which will probably be in the root of your SD card, using notepad and change the line
Platform=PPC
to read
Platform=PNA
This will then ensure that the application fills the myguide screen.
Scratch all of the above, it was a red herring!!
After more testing it seemed that the problem was being caused by running either ceplayer or explorer.
The simple fix turned out to be unchecking the box for the start menu to be 'always on top' in the settings in windows.
Using Explorer:
Start - Settings - Taskbar and Start Menu - Uncheck 'Always on top' box.
This seems to fix all applications that sometimes get 'stuck' at the wrong size.

CEPlayer is the CE version of Windows Media player. You can get it from here http://www.gizmondoforums.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8075&hl=media+player and probably other places. On my MyGuide it would not play videos without a lot of jerkiness. An alternative is TCPMP Player which I have heard good things about but not tried (I'm not that bothered about playing media on my satnav).

My Myguide has just arrived. However I have plugged it into my computer and I keep getting the assending and desending tones of when a USB device connects and deconnects. These tones just keep repeating. I was expecting that the myguide would come up as an external hard drive but it does not. I have tried plugging it into other computers and get exactly the same result.
Is the product faulty or am I doing something wrong?

You'll need to download and install Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5.0. so that the MyGuide is seen as a mobile device rather than an external hard drive.

PoI, I get the same as you when trying to use powersave function. I too have installed other apps but I don't think that's the problem.

but now the pna not have sound .
with the explorer i'm going on settings\sound from win ce,
but nothing!!

What file was in the RAR's? The iGO map for uk and ireland should be named something like "UnitedKingdom7PPC_2007.07_070726.fbl" and be about 100mb in size.

Thats a new one on me. I've used that map and never had a complaint about it being out of date. Indeed up till a few weeks ago it was the most recent map. Does iGO just complain or does it complain and then refuse to use the map?
For what it's worth the latest map update from 10/07 can be found here: http://rapidshare.com/users/I175RB but I'm not sure it will help. I wonder if you have the correct licence for the map - I assume so else the map would show as locked. Do you have "basemap.fbl" in your maps folder - thats the basic underlying "world" map. If not you can copy your original MyGuide basemap across since basemap is not licenced. No reason why any of that should solve the "out of date" problem but I'm grasping at straws :confused: I have not been able to reproduce the problem you are having so far.

Cheers mark and GMCMen. Everything is up and running now
My SD card was corrupted so I had to re format it. Everything works well now apart from the map.
GMC's UK map seemed to be corrupt when I downloaded it. I don't want to re download if it is corrupt as I am on limited bandwidth
I would really like a copy of the map on the link that MARK C gave me. The only thing is that It won't let me download part two of the UK map. It either says I am already dowloading something or I have entered the incorrect code too many times. I tried downloading it on my friends computer and it would not let me either. It is only 1.4 meg. If anyone has it can they send it to me?

I think rapidshare does that if you don't close the old browser window (or else its if you DO close the old window) God knows - something like that anyway :eek:

My 3100 stop working two weeks ago.. it seems SD card was corrupted and is not being recognize my device...
Since then I have try almost everything said on this forum without any luck.. the latest problem that I have is than when I load Igo up it tells me that my map files are outdated and to visit navngo.com. I download UK maps on http://rapidshare.com/users/I175RB and IGO do not start when selected it goes back to start menu...
Please if somebody can give guidelines.. I am almost buying a new GPS and forget about Myguide 3100.. I have spend hours trying to make it work..

I've not had an error but I find that if I add too many POI's it makes loading iGO very slow tried adding all UK supermarkets and after that it took about a minute to load so I deleted them!.

I have experienced the maps are out of date message - there are two solutions that have worked for me, firstly attempt to download a newer map and secondly, ensure you have the 'licence.db' file that came with the map.

I wonder if you can help please. I have been reading the posts in this thread and thanks to everybody I am now running iGO on MyGuide (which I’m pleased with as I am only a novice when it comes to Computers!)
I have not been able to get TomTom to work yet though. I downloaded the file kindly provided by gmcmen on post #448 and downloaded the TomTom map from the link provided in the readme file (UK and Ireland Map in 2 parts dated 22/08/07). I then saved the 20 files in a directory called “United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland” which sits on the root of the SD Card and reset the unit. I have a GPS signal and the display shows the speed I’m doing when driving around but no map is displayed on the screen. When I try to find out what maps are installed it only shows the Canary Islands.
Is there anything else I need to change to get the software to recognise the UK and Ireland map?
Any advice would be much appreciated.

In case it might help others here are the results of my attempts to get TMC working on the MyGuide.
Since EBuyer no longer sell the TMC receiver I got mine from ZHS - http://www.zh-s.de/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=1728 in Germany 44 euros + 17.50 postage. Their service was excellent and the receiver arrived in three days complete with a free box of matches. Yes, that's right, a free box of matches - strange :)
My first experiences were disappointing - iGO/Mio etc. got seemed to get no signal at all. eventually after driving around for miles I found one spot just north of the M4 where I could get a signal if I trailed the aerial out through the sun roof but even then only if I was parked and facing the right way! TMC looked like being a non-starter.
Then I tried Destinator which worked much better getting a signal from Heart FM quite easily. However with no indication of signal strength in Destinator it was impossible to know if I was getting a strong signal and therefore all available messages, or not. iGO, when it did get a signal was much nicer to use with a good display of TMC messages and a meter showing signal strength. Noticibly, when getting a good signal iGO was getting an average of between 50 and 100 messages covering incidents up to 80 miles away. Destinator has never showed much more than 40 incidents to about the same range. Differences between the two TMC providers perhaps?
Destinator uses TrafficMaster which is broadcast via Heart and Capital FM in London and the choice of two stations makes it a lot easier to get a signal. iGO uses iTMC broadcast via Classic FM. Classic FM has only two transmitters in London neither seems all that strong at least when used with the in-car aerial supplied with the TMC receiver. I was faced with having to change from my favourite iGO to Destinator if I wanted to use TMC. I started wondering if I could connect up to an external car aerial.
Eventually I plucked up the courage to open the TMC unit and look at the aerial connections. The aerial plug is small stereo jack plug and two of the three connections are used - the point (whatever its proper name is) for the signal and the outer for the ground/shielding. Since I happened to have a spare plug I wired it up to a standard car aerial socket (from Halfords) and connected it to a car aerial placed inside the car on the dashboard (just laying at the front against the screen). I was delighted to find that I immediately got a good signal from Classic FM and iGO quickly filled up with traffic messages. Having driven around a bit I am finding a good to reasonable signal most of the time - it comes and goes a bit, not surprising in a built up area but this does not cause a problem (unless you get stuck a traffic lights in a dead area and then iGO starts hunting for a signal after a while - even so its not really a problem).
Next job is to fit the aerial properly outside the car (or arrange a splitter so that I can use the main car aerial but frankly I think it will be easier to stick this one on the roof than to access the wiring for the existing one.
So the upshot of all this that MyGuide TMC will just about work in London with Destinator and an in-car aerial (I found the best placement was up over the interior mirror and then back across down roof towards the rear window) but it works much better if you can connect a proper car aerial. And iGO's TMC control panel is much nicer than Destinators.
A comparison between iGO and Destinator TMC:
iGO shows TMC messages in a pages list with 5 entries per page. You can easily page through the messages should the mood take you. Plus with Rik's skin in split screen mode you can actually have the messages displayed on the map screen. On the down side there is no quick way to reach the TMC screen - you have to go to the GPS status page and then press the TMC button.
Destinators TMC page can be reached easily either by one click on the TMC icon on the map or from the main menu via Route..Traffic. However after that it's down hill. The message list is a plain scrolling list, not paged, showing only two entries at a time. While you are trying to scroll down it constantly resets you to the top of the list as new messages appear or are updated.
Both iGO and Destinator allow you to search for a station manually and both allow you to exclude selected stations. With iGO you can choose to see all messages or only those affecting your route and you can sort either by type or distance. Destinator shows you all messages when you have no route planned and only those affecting your route when you have one planned There are no sorting choices. Both programs let you highlight a traffic message and then show its location on the map - Destinator wins a point here because you can then go "back" from the map to the TMC list whereas iGO just dumps you in the normal map screen with the map centered on the incident.
Destinator has a very loud and annoying "gong" that it sounds when a message arrives (I've since edited it to a quiet "tick" sound). With TTS on Destinator will read out TMC messages though I'm not sure what criterion it uses to select which ones to read. If you don't have a route planned you occasionally hear things like "in 20 miles traffic congestion" - not especially helpful :)
Ok, I've rambled on for long enough. My TMC works and I'm happy.

What a fantastic bit of kit the 3100 is, I've even got "Yoda, Darth Vader, 'Sexy News reader LADY' voices and all the speedcams,red-light cam's,speed zones etc runing fine on Tom Tom v6.02.........
Is it just me or does Tom Tom apear to run FASTER on the My Guide than is did on a Tom Tom One ????

For what its worth I have used the TMC and recieved traffic updates using IGO 2006. I live in gloucestershire and have picked up news around swindon but also got regular updates on a recent trip to cambridgeshire. The ariel on my car just goes from the unit up to the rear view mirror, twists round the sun visor and then comes back down the windscreen pillar. My car has an integrated Navteq satnav but the RDS traffic updates are totally different to those I get on the Myguide. I'm just happy it works, I got my TMC half price with europe maps from Ebuyer, I guess they were giving them away to get rid of them, they are useless with standard My Guide in my experience. Looks like I have a whole load of stuff to catch up on with V7 etc, keep up the good work.

HI Soak....Memory-Map v513 to the best of my knowlage is only compatible with windows ppc 2003/4. As My Guide is running windows CE I dont think it will run. The v513 was built to run on a pc then just send a route and the small section of map to the pda/g.p.s. unit. Memory-Map doesn't install anything to the pda as such,it just sends the route information and the small section of map covering the route.
I have spent many hours too playing with memory map and got it working fine on my HP Ipaq 2210,via a bluetooth g.p.s. reciver.
By the way if you need any maps for Memory-map I have MOST of the U.K. covered :-)

I have not tried Memory map (as I don't have a copy! ;) ) but with other games and things, what I did was install them unto a pda then copy the folder from the pda onto the sd card of myguide and run it from there. Some work, some don't.
@ Neil FJ1200 if you have it on a pna you should try to copy the folder across, if it says can not find file "blah blah" search pna for the file and put it in the folder, try again, it can be a long draw out thing, but thats how it is done.

Thanks to your excellent instructions I now have Memory-Map PocketNav working on the Myguide 3100.
With regards to what the program does:
The PC version lets you browse OS maps in great detail, including 3D views of maps and aerial photographs (and print them if you wish). Maps and pre-planned routes can be downloaded to the Mobile Device. On the Mobile Device the maps and routes are displayed and the GPS navigates you on the OS map. The actual track you have followed can be uploaded back to the PC and the distance covered, elevation profiles etc. studied.
In all, it is a SatNav for ramblers, cyclists etc.

On the map loader cd that came with the unit, you will find a folder called "PNA"
or on your "flash disk"
inside is a file called "data.zip"
extract this to your HDD
open "ui"
open "common"
you will see 2 images on called "myguidelogo.bmp" and "generic.bmp"
download the 2 in this link (they are the same, just different names)

edit 1 of them to what you want and save it twice as both names.
replace the ones mentioned above with your new ones.
repack to "data.zip"
create a folder on an SD card called "PNA"
in the folder put "DATA.ZIP" "igolaunch.exe" and "LANGSYNC.EXE" (both found on flash or cd"
put the disk in the MyGuide and press "reset"
it will load and say "updating" your done!
Note: if using "winrar" to repack,
important: open the folder "data.zip"
edit
select all
right click "add to archive"
change name to "data.zip" as it will be "data.rar"

hello all, just first like to say well done on the info so far! i have read all 19 pages of this thread before i asked a question, probably already explained but everything i tried did not work.:D
got everything running on my myguide 3100, but still cant get any maps to work with TomTom..Just so you know, i am not using an sdcard, i am using the inbuilt flash memory(512mb) will this make a difference???? ive tried many maps in various location's on the inbuilt memory, but have had no luck as yet..am i missing something or do i need to edit a file?? if you can answer this question links to any files needed would be appreciated..
also, why have i not got a maploader cd that people are talking about? do i need it??
last but not least... would it not be a good idea to upload an already configered "with maps" installed flash folder/sd card?? instead of all the random files amongst this amazing 19 pages!! just a suggestion, which i will do myself once sorted..

From looking at my myguide box, it says my model is a 3110 with 512mb inbuilt (sticker under the unit itself says 3100 :confused: :D ) so that kinda answers that 1, good old myguide!! lol
i cant imagine it being different from yours apart from extra memory, and conflicting box!

didnt realise maps were that big "1.2gb" , the uk one i downloaded was only 214mb???, so even if there is a work around reading from flash instead of sdcard, my internal memory probably wont be sufficient for TT and its map/s :o better go and buy an sdcard.:D
ill stick to the igo for now...

I get the error: "Cannot copy the file. " when installing pocket navigator to the mobile device (in this case a SY885).

Another way to try it is by copying "MMPocketNav.PPC2K_ARM.CAB" from the PC out of C:\Program Files\Memory-Map\Navigator\PDA onto the root of the SD Card. Put the sd card in the Navgo and assuming you have it unlocked explore to the SD card and run the installation from there.

The difference between us and them is that, we can create buttons to run programs, they can't! So they must access the desktop to create shortcuts there for to run applications.

this is how my one reads, you can use the same maps for 2006 and V7.
If what I have written does not make sense to you, then ask someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you.

There are utilities that you can use to install from CAB. I've used CabWUZ from ocp software http://www.ocpsoftware.com/products.php With this program you can do manual installs from cab file (often just a matter of creating folders and copying files).
To make your life easy here - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MNX14OFJ is a preconfigured set up of Destinator - just unzip the files to an SD card and pop it into your MyGuide. It has UK maps included - if you need to add others place them in a new folder in the Destinator folder - name the folder the same as the map file you are installing (look in the file WINCE.INI that comes with the map and find the entry for "MapName" then use that name for the new folder). You may also need to find appropriate voice files for your use - this version has only English. A complete set of voices can be found here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ASRKVNP0
I'll sort something similar for R66 when I have a bit more time.
I would really not bother with Navigon - I got it working as an excercise but it is too slow to be usable on the MyGuide - the map, even at 30 mph, is at least 100 yards behind the cars actual position and calculating a route takes ages. Plus the there are no individual maps for EU countries, you have to have the complete Western Europe map which is close to 2gb. This forces you to install the software on your flash disk and use one entire 2gb SD for the map. It's just not worth it :)

The last time I charged mine was a couple of days ago. It has been used for about half an hour since then, and is still showing 85% charged. I am using the proper Myguide adapter (from Holfords). If you are using the USB then it may not be charging the battery to full capacity.

I have just got a Myguide 3100 - the battery life seems extremely short. Fully charged will only give about 70 minutes. Currently charging overnight with a 12v car supply ( not cigarette lighter). Does anyone know if mains charger improves the charge held or has any comparitive data.:confused:

Gmc, you're perseverance and patience is truly commendable, as is your dedication to cracking this little unit wide open. I bought this from Al's fords just before Christmas and was aware that units can be cracked and improved/personalised but never had the confidence to try, for fear of breaking an invaluable purchase. Saying that I was very pleased with the MyGuide software but frustrated at the lack of maps/support.
I'm due to go on holiday to Florida (first family holiday abroad) in about 4 weeks and baulked at the thought of paying about £30 p.wk. to hire one over there, so I thought I'd have a look around.
I read all 20 pages of this thread, enlisted my son as an adviser (someone to blame if I messed up :D ) and then decided what I wanted to do to my machine.
With the help of the post above, I now have MyGuide, iGO 6, and Tom Tom running as well as the apps supplied by Gmc, along with maps to Florida.
I do have a slight problem (not my reason for posting, honest). Some of the games, as mentioned previously, don't fit on my screen. Has anyone managed to fix this somehow and can they recommend/suggest how to do so? Any help would be much appreciated, but if not, I can certainly live with it.

the unit comes with a 1gig card, I am using a 4 gig, running tomtom, miomap, Turbo-slug (you'll know what I mean when it comes) and memory map and still plenty of room for music and films.

I dont think the brand of card makes much difference Jon. Any decent card will do. If you are modding bigger is better but only up to a point because the machine won't handle cards over 2GB.
Security check is very fast for me but If this is your first order it may take a day or two.

I never found a solution to this (or the occasionally disappearing OK button), so in the end I got rid of most of the games. I'm a fussy sod, and this kind of glitch just ends up bugging me!!

I would go for a cheap 2gb card from the source you quote. It should be enough for most things you are likely to want to run.
I noticed a distinct speed improvement using a 2gb Sandisk card over a 2gb Kingston one, so not all cards are equal!;)

Hello Valiant, this problem was annoying, but has been sorted way back in the thread(page 8 i think)take old games off and try the ones below. these games work a treat on my 3100..

may i have the instructions to installa destinator-r66- and navigon on my Myguide 3100?
once i can try to execute a .cab from sd card the process fail!!!!!
Here is the SD setup for r66 - I've not included the maps this time as I assume you want those for Italy? As before just dump all to an SD card and you are set. If adding it to an existing SD card of course you'll need to amalgamate the ADDONS.TXT files into one (should be obvious what to do).

PS: I forgot to mention that Route 66 has no exit button - the only way out of it is to press the reset button. However, you can try instaling BananaPC (http://www.snoopsoft.com/other/index.html) which is a mini taskmanager that stays visible on top of R66 and (usually) lets you exit. To install BananaPC just run the downloaded installer while your MyGuide is connected via ActiveSync and it will install - you'll have to manually add it to ADDONS.TXT. Then run it before starting R66 and you should see its little icons on the top of the display.

Has anyone found a setting which causes the 'simple' speedcamera warning tone to only sound once, rather than repeating continuously?:confused:
Although I now have a nice 'ting' sound rather than the irritating turkey gobble, I find the repeat limits the kind of warning that you can have.

Hey there!
I managed to get igo 2006plus working from SD card. But it has a strange problem.
It freezes about once a day. And have to hit reset.
Also, when it loads, i hit Igo button, it starts to load igo, but freezes on "geodb ctor".
no matter what i does that every time i restart.
Only solution i came up with: reset, after boot up take sd card out, turn off with power button, turn on again, put sd card in, hit igo button.
This way it loads without problem.
But it freezes after about a day of usage.
it stores information on SD and it gets full? i doubt it...
any idea what's wrong?

I had a similar problem with my system - have you just installed a new POI file or Speedcams, as the unit is apparently freezing at the point where it updates the internal Igo.db database file. The solution is to allow it to continue (it may take a good few minutes the first time - but after that should load up normally).

I have used the Pocket Notepad from. http://tillanosoft.com/ce/downloads.html I installed it quite a long time ago, but don’t remember any issues. If you want to edit the addon.txt etc, I found I needed to recreate these on my PC in notepad first then copy it back in order for it display correctly.
I found the built in keyboard would not always pop up. So I have installed jotkbd.exe from yetanotherhomepage (http://www.yetanotherhomepage.com/j7...es/jotkbd.zip).
It is a quite big on the screen but if you need more space just selecting the function keys to make it smaller then add back the standard keyboard. (It was a bit temperamental until I realized it needed to set it up by enabling all the parts until I got to blank buttons on the title bar and used them to close it down)
If all you wanted was somewhere to write a quick note using the stylus then I prefer Stop Time http://home.comcast.net/~jonsachs/ that has a stopwatch, clock, calendar as well as ‘post it note’ screen where you can use the stylus to write notes (be warned though if you reset MyGuide these notes are lost). When combined with the ‘hiding’ the taskbar (Darkmatter post 523) and BananaPC (MarkC post 587) – maximising the application it all sort of lines up ok.

I think I would try reformatting the SD card, and then copy the files back to it. I have found that it is quite easy to corrupt the data on a card with the constant ejecting and inserting involved with getting things set up how you want (assuming you havn't done it all through activesync).

As far as I know a 4gb card will not work. I have been more than happy with the 2gb Sandisk cards which I bought from that site with free delivery as mentioned in post #584! They were just over a fiver each.

Yes and no, I have a 4gb that does work (but it is not SDHC), but browsing a map is very slow so I don't use it. I also, I have a 4gb SDHC that does not work. It is very hard to get a 4gb that is not SDHC, I have not tried formatting the SDHC to fat. I might give it a try later.

Well I formatted the 4GB SDHC from my camera, to the FAT file system and it does NOT work in the MyGuide (it does NOT work with FAT32 either). The other 4GB that does work is very slow to load and slow to browse maps or zoom in and out, I would NOT recommend it!
If anyone wants to know where I got it, eb@y look for one that is NOT marked SDHC.

Anyone had any luck getting MioMap 3.3 with TTS running on their MyGuide?
I've got TTS on V7, but it's quite stuttery. Plus I prefer the MioMap interface.
Can 3.2 be upgraded to run TTS?

UPDATE:
I've managed to sort this now thanks.
I've got miomap 3.3 with 3 TTS voices working ok. Just the top left direction icons are playing up a bit at the moment!

So far I'm quite impressed with the TTS voices in miomap 3.3. Much better pro-nunciation (for some reason ebuyer won't allow the correct spelling) than those in iGO8.
Not so impressed with the speedcam handling though....you can't actaully set a speed for a mobile camera, and so never seem to get a warning for them (apart from on screen), so I guess I'll have to reclassify all mobiles as gatsos.
Just got a couple of glitches with the skin to try and iron out now.

For those of you who havn't tried yet, here is a little skin for iGO 2006 Plus which adds some nice extra features to the original software, and which seems to work well on the MyGuide.

All you do is create a new folder in the iGO (or whatever you have called it) folder on the SD card called 'skin' and insert the small downloaded zip file into it. Then hit the reset button and off you go!

The version I got hold of had the original samantha voice included, and I just merged in the other files from the V7 tts folders to add emily and jill. As far as I can tell the files and folder structure is identical to that in V7.
I'm just trying to find a pna version now that doesn't have the missing/corrupt navigation icons (top left porthole when in cockpit mode).

To briefly answer your questions....
If you want to do any serious modding on this device I would recommend that you spend a few pounds on a card reader. Using ActiveSync for transferring a large amount of data can be painfully slow.
Yes, you can get updated maps and celebrity voices (for tomtom). Google is your friend here.
The main benefit of using iGo 2006 over the standard MyGuide software is the ability to update the maps. iGo8 adds more features.
There are some links for miomap and memory map a few posts back I think.
There is no substitute for the accuracy of the camera database at pocketgpsworld. If you're happy to pay the subs, I would go for this. There's no harm in trying the free database from Madmans link, but when I looked I wasn't too convinced about the quality.
Be prepared for many late nights, as once you realise what you can do with this device, it gets quite addictive.

TT maps must go on the root of the sd card, not in any other folder.
Maps - read post no. 543
v7 if you get a smiley face, it normally means the path to the file in "addons.txt is not correct,
V7 = "", "\\Storage Card\\iGO7\\iGOpna.exe" It is important that this part is correct, iGO7 is not the same as iGO 7 (it is not case sensitive). I would try using "explorer" and find your way to the .exe file and run it from there. If that fails and you still get an error, Make a note of the error and get back to us.

On the root, means when you click the icon for "Storage Card" or "SD Card" and it opens to view the folders, this is where you should have your TT maps in their own folder. When you open your "storage card" you will have folders like "iGO", "Navigator", "V7" etc and a TT map e.g "UK_and_IE_plus_major_roads_of_WE 1409" or "Canary_Islands" or if you want both. (and yes leave them in their own folder)
I would assume your "HIGHWAY" problem is what you thought, that you are using US voice!

I've got the igo8 from a download link posted in #605 and am having a few problems with fatal errors. Namely, when you click on the cursor option and the 2d map option a fatal error immediately pops up. Have i got a dodgy download, or is there something else amiss?

I also get a fatal error but only when after I exit the application. Once i'm in i can use with no problem but i exit that's when i get the error. I'm not too bothered as long as it doesn't happen during the application but i'll try the download in latest post from gmcmen

If you're using rapidshare, and don't have a fixed IP address with your ISP, then just disconnect your broadband connection and then restart it. No more waiting!;)

I've now ditched V7 in favour of the better TTS voices included with miomap 3.3.
So GPS now currently running:-
iGo2006 plus - UK+IE maps, speedcams (inc. modified warning tone), Andy Elliot 8.5.1 skin with spoken speedcam warning patch, extra voices.
iGo8 - UK+IE maps, UK 3d terrain, UK buildings, TTS voices. (don't use at the moment as speedcams are unusable in this release)
TomTom6 - Full Western Europe maps, zoned speedcams with custom spoken warnings, extra voices, custom poi's.
MioMap3.3 - UK+IE maps, Quicksilver Reborn 1.3 skin, updated TTS voices, speedcams with modified warning tones (MioMap 3.3 or the QR1.3 skin appear to use both !alert5 and !alert3).
MyGuide - Original maps and software - untouched apart from speedcams added.
NOTE: If you want to keep your original MyGuide maps working on the unit, then avoid using either 'igo2006' or 'miomap' as folder names for those respective apps, as MyGuide will look at the maps in those folders rather than those in the MyGuide/maps folder! Obviously they will appear as locked in the MyGuide software.
Of course I suspect that only one of those folder names is the culprit, but I'm not able to test at the moment. I called mine 'igo2006plus' and 'miomap33', and it works fine.

These are Tom Tom only I'm afraid.
You can add TTS (text to speech) voices to iGo8, which then gives it the ability to speak street names with varying degrees of success!

Here is mine, but I doubt addons.txt is the cause of your problem.
You could try renaming the folder containing iGO2006 to 'iGO2006plus' rather than just 'IGO' as there may be some code in igo8 which looks to see if this 'IGO' folder is present (a problem I recently discovered in the standard MyGuide software).
Also you might like to change the icon on your Navigate button!;)

Extract the archive to a folder called miomap33 on your SD card. It's a .rar file, so you may need to install a program on your PC to extract it (I use 7zip which I would recommend http://www.7-zip.org/download.html).
Add the following line to your addons.txt file....
MioMap 3.3 = "", "\\Storage Card\\miomap33\\miomap.exe"
Copy your iGO2006 maps into the miomap33\maps folder.
Enjoy!

The problem with V7 must be in this line of your "addons.txt" probably one of the last 2 parts.
V7 = "", "\\Storage Card\\iGO7\\iGOpna.exe"
What this line means;
V7 (a name to identify the program)
=
"", "(which icon to use, if it is left like this it will use the default icon)
\\Storage Card (location of program)
\\iGO7 (name of the folder on SD Card where program is located, this must be the identical name)
\\iGOpna.exe" (name of the executable file that launches the program, this must be the identical name)

Having messed around with it for a little while i'm pretty sure it has to do specifically with the cursor function. I'm using a Poland map, as i'm in Poland, and the cursor default seems to be the centre of Warsaw. I'm also in a no signal area sitting in my flat. Is there any way to alter the cursor settings manually or will this depend, simply on picking up satellite signals?
The error message i get is:

A google search of the full term results in nothing. A search of the exception line and windows ce seems to throw up a lot of results which could be anything from windows ce to the program/part of the program

I think DarkMatter may have addressed this issue a few posts back, have you changed the name of your iGO 2006 folder on the sd card? If you want to test to see if another program is causing the problem, run iGO8 on an SD Card with no other software on it and check if the error still occurs.

I don't think there is a way to set a default cursor location when no signal is present, but I could be wrong.

No, you can't use the tomtom voices on iGO based systems.
It is possible (with a lot of work) to modify the voice files for iGO, but without professionally recorded voice commands the results will almost certainly sound much worse than the standard voices.
Re the archive question.......the file you downloaded was itworks.rar I think?
I assumed from your question that you didn't know what to do with this file. Just think of it as a zip file, but one that needs a special program to unzip (extract) it. Once unzipped you can copy the contents to a folder on your SD card and modify addons.txt accordingly.

If anyone is unsing the Andy Elliott 8.5.1 skin to provide spoken speed camera warnings for iGO 2006 plus, I have modified the speedcamera patch and generated a new UK male voice file using tomtoms Andy voice, so that the voice is now loud and clear. If I get time at some point I may try adding a new female voice.
I've also removed the other languages from the menu selection, leaving only the english ones.
Note that the modified voice will only say the actual speed limit for 30,40,50,60 & 70 MPH gatso/mobile/spec limits. For all other instances (rare unless you want KPH) the warning will be spoken, but you will need to refer to the screen for the camera trigger speed.
All MPH and KPH spoken warnings are sill present in the two US voices.
If anyone wants these mods, let me know and I will try to upload it somewhere.

I am having a lot of problems getting a signal and/or position accuracy when I have a signal, so I was hoping to buy and external antenna. Having looked at the myguide website its just a blank page for the 3100 antenna.
So I guess my question is are external antenna generic so that I can use any with the 3100 or are they model and make specific?
Is this a common problem or possibly a faulty internal antenna?

I had an odd problem when I tried to do this: when I
Click "Pocket Device" "install pocket Navigator"

the pop-up, rather than saying how many bytes are available as it does for "Main Memory" just says "<unavailable>", and fails to install to it. However, the Storage Card is visible through the ActiveSync explorer, and I can transfer files to and from it directly. I've tried two different cards, one "empty", the other with v7, TT, and iGo2006 installed; both give the same result. It's as if there is a registry setting on the MyGuide which is inhibiting installation to anything other than Main Memory. Anybody else seen this (and more importantly, fixed it)?

Let us know if it works, I can not test it as I have used ActiveSync to install it and I don't know if it will work without the registry entries.

I don't see a problem, if the folder names and the .exe files are correct.
One thing you should change is to remove this part from "igopath"
GPS]

Why? because "addons.txt is a continuation of "igopath.txt"
igopath is for the flash drive and addons is for additional stuff on an SD card, if that makes sense.
One line I would put into "igopath" is
Explorer = "", "\\Windows\\Explorer.exe"
then you can always use explorer, no matter what SD card is inserted, you can then remove it from "addons".
Make these changes, do a reset and see what happens, all the fun is in experimenting :)

If anyone is unsing the Andy Elliott 8.5.1 skin to provide spoken speed camera warnings for iGO 2006 plus, ....
... modified voice will only say the actual speed limit for 30,40,50,60 & 70 MPH gatso/mobile/spec limits.

Does this apply to just vanilla iGO 2006 plus... or alos to the myguide3100 built in version? ... but yes I would be grateful for anything that changes the speedcam waring from the "stangled parrot" ... also anything that add more detail to the left had part of the cockpit ... eg there is space for more metrics than just the 3 provided below the direction ICON.

My 3100 arrived today, but reported that it couldn't find any map files. It seems that it cannot see the SD drive.
I can load the basemap and Ireland map onto the 'flash drive', and then the navigate opens and displays the maps. But there is no evidence of an 'SD drive' to load anything onto.
I have tried a 2GB SD in place of the supplied 256MB SD, and that does not appear either.
Can someone advise me whether the 'SD Drive' should appear in the 'Mobile Device' folder (alongside the 'Flash Drive')? Or should I be looing somewhere else for this elusive storage device?

Hi there,
I'm just trying to iron out a bug with the specs camera average speed display (this bug is in the the standard iGo software) at the moment. I have also added a female voice and fixed a couple of other bugs since I first posted. I will upload the complete skin when I've finished (hopefully later tonight).
To answer your other questions:-
1. I don't know what effect the skin would have on the MyGuide software (I don't use it anymore)
2. Yes, the skin I'm using adds 2 extra metrics boxes to the left hand side + the whole left hand pane slides out of view with one tap if you want more map space!

This is my customised version, so you'll have to live with my colour/icon choices etc for now.
The speedcam patch is purely English language only, with two new UK voices and improved US voices over the original. Also I've (hopefully) fixed a bug which was preventing speeds being spoken on specs cameras.
I've applied a patch to try and sort out the specs average speed bug (the average speed appears to show in kmh rather than mph once a specs camera is passed) but I havn't been able to test this yet.
Either way, I don't think the handling of specs cameras is any more broken than in the original iGo code! You may need to tap the camera icon to clear the average speed monitor if it doesn't pick up the second specs camera automatically, again this is no different to the standard behaviour.
Just unzip the file, and place the SKIN folder inside your iGo2006 folder on your myguide (same place as lang, maps, poi folders etc). There is no need to unpack the zip files within the SKIN folder. Then just restart and start playing!:)
To stop using the skin at any time just rename it to oldSKIN (or something similar) and restart.
If anyone can look at the specs code and improve it, then please do, as I have a feeling that I havn't fixed the problem completely.:(

Ok, now I know it isn't fixed. The average speed doesn't always pop up when passing the first specs camera, plus when it does the average is actually multiplied by about 2.5 times or something. Maybe it's camera speed + av.. speed in kmh? I thought that it was a straight kmh to mph conversion required, but it obviously isn't. Any programmers out there?

Yes if you are using ActiveSync to explore it, you should see a drive called "Storage Card" in the same window as "Flash Drive"

Thanks for your replies. Having left it on charge overnight and re-inserted the SD card a few times, it now appears as 'Storage card' folder. Everything now seems to be working.

Well, I havn't managed to fix the average speed bug on the Specs cameras, which for some reason can be out by as much as 100mph, and to be honest I find the handling of specs cameras in iGO 2006 to be a bit hit and miss generally.
The idea (I think) is that when the first camera is passed the unit sets a flag to say you are in a specs zone. This is when the average speed box appears. As you pass the second camera the flag is cleared along with the av.speed box.
The trouble is that often (and you really notice this with spoken warnings) the first camera will trigger 2 or more alerts, meaning that the specs zone flag may actually be swithed off as you pass the first camera. Of course what can happen then is that the second camera is mistaken for the first of a pair, and the visual warning then stays on the screen until manually cleared.
This could all be wrong, but it's the best explanation I could come up with!
Anyway, what I've done is disable the average speed part of the warnings altogether, leaving specs cameras to be treated like all other cameras. So you will get a spoken warning (in theory at least) when approaching the start and end cameras in an average speed zone, but no visual average speed warning while 'in the zone'.

I have the coordinates for where I'm off to on my hols and it looks remote but knowing that Google maps use Tele Atlas mapping I'm not holding out a lot of hope. To make it worse the flight times have been put back so I'm going to be searching for this place around midnight.

I've been wondering how much punishment the reset and power buttons can withstand on these things! Mine are still working ok, but neither feel 'as good as new'. I guess the reset button in particular wasn't designed to be used quite of often.;)

The main map colour schemes should remain unchanged. Did you have a satellite lock when you looked? The night colours will normally only show when the unit time has been set correctly (normally via a satellite position lock).
With this version of the skin you should have black menu buttons that glow green when pressed during the day, and glow red when pressed at night.

So I guess my question is are external antenna generic so that I can use any with the 3100 or are they model and make specific?
As you said later it's possibly a faulty antenna if it won't work even in the open. But FYI (and anyone else who wants to know) the external connection is standard MMCX so there are plenty of matching external antenna (I got one from [shop beginning with "map"] for GPB 9.99 which works fine).
Be warned that the MMCX socket is delicate so take care when plugging and unplugging!

MYGUIDE MP3
Ok I have installed Windows CE Player on my MYGUIDE. It is great but I was thinking of installing an alternative as I plan to use it as an MP3 player in my car. CE Player is good but the buttons are small and it doesnt display the song name etc well. Can anyone suggest an alternative? ideally with big buttons to press and good music management.
I have looked on the internet and can see alternative mobile windows players. Can anyone tell me which of these will be compatible with the myguide and what is the criteria. I see it runs Windows 5.0 with an ARM processor. Is there anything else to specify?

The MyGuide software is just a rebranded version of iGO, so generally speaking they are pretty much the same. The big advantage of switching to the iGO version (and the reason I initially did it) is the fact that you can obtain more up-to-date maps for it, especially given the lack of support from MyGuide. You can do this without touching your original internal software or MyGuide SD card (provided you have a spare SD card) so there is nothing to lose really! It can all be reset to a 'factory state' if for any reason you need to return it, just be popping in the original card and hitting the reset button on the back.
If you do a bit of searching through this forum, many of your questions will be answered!

I installed tomtom on my myguide and the relevant maps and to be honest it was rubbish. The file also had loads of voices such as Al Pacino etc which worked and were entertaining but a bit useless if the Tom Tom is sending you on a wild goose chase. I have been using the igo2007 version which seems quite good , but the maps are a little outdated. this was an issue across most of the sat navs at the time ( 3 Months ago ) as they seemed to have the same core mapping supplied by the same company. Anyway I wondered if V8 of igo was available and if any more upto date maps were available.
If anyone wnats the voices file i might be able to upload them and likewise if anyone knows how to use the voices file for the Igo that would be usefull and appreciated.

yeh i have the tom tom on iGO 2006 on another SD card its all working the iGO is much better than tom tom.
I read somewhere earlier that iGO 8 or 2008 is out? is it possible to have that on myguide 3100 too?

The version of iGO 8 we are using is not the final version. I think in the very near future we should have the full version working.

I am new to forums so apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place. I have been following the posts to the forum with some interest and have just taken delivery of the Myguide 3100. Many thanks to gmcmen, DarkMatter and others for some first rate advice. First impressions are good and the unit has directed me accurately so far, however, the unit behaves in an odd way at times. A good example of this is that my journey to work/home is essentially a main road journey of about four miles to the town centre with no deviation required once into/outside the town centre. I have been testing the unit on this journey and for no apparent reason I am directed into the ‘same’ side road on the ‘out’ and ‘return’ journey. Obviously with local knowledge I know this is wrong so curiosity got the better of me yesterday when I had time on my hands, and I followed the instruction to turn off the main road into the side road. As I was now going the ‘wrong’ direction the unit immediately re-calculated my route to direct me about a quarter of a mile via another side road back to the main road about 200 yards further on from where I had just turned off!
My question is basically is this, is the above likely to be a bug in the supplied software? And if I upgraded to other software mentioned in the forum are there likely to be less errors. I am new to sat navs and wondered if this type of error described above is normal.

Algebra are you using the software originally supplied with the unit? I found this to be unreliable. I also found that TomTom was also a bit rubbish. I have used The Igo 2006 and have found this to be the best of a bad bunch. Unfortunately the maps are a little outdated for all the sat nave systems, as far as I am aware, as they use the same mapping source. TBH I don't trust sat navs as I Lokie you test then against kinown routes and they are no substitute for experienced rotes and paper maps. I only use then when I am within a few miles of my destination, relying on paper maps experience to get me close to my destination.

My question is basically is this, is the above likely to be a bug in the supplied software? And if I upgraded to other software mentioned in the forum are there likely to be less errors. I am new to sat navs and wondered if this type of error described above is normal.
My money would be on an error in the map, rather than the navigation software. The maps for MyGuide, iGO, Mio, TomTom, Google etc are all supplied by TeleAtlas, and so generally all contain the same errors.
Changing the navigation software will enable you to use more recent maps, but don't be suprised if the error is still there as map/road changes seem to take an age to filter through. You can report mapping or routing errors on the TeleAtlas website.

Also, bear in mind that no alert will sound unless you are actually driving around. Simulating the route will not work.

Thanks maintenanceman, yes original software, got the unit last Thursday. You are correct about the last few miles, a friend of mine uses TomTom on his PDA phone and does just that. He says, as you do, most people could find their way to a town or city in the UK without a map it is the last bit of the journey were the sat nav comes in.

I purchased the files for the MyGuide then coppied that Speed cam Folder and placed it into the POI folder for the iGo 2006, Reset the SatNav .... But the Cams do not show up on the map.

You should have a file called speedcamtext.txt which you should copy to the speedcam folder, both on the MyGuide and iGO2006. You may need to delete any other files that are already in the speedcam folder first. You then press the reset button on the back, and that is it.

First impressions are good and the unit has directed me accurately so far, however, the unit behaves in an odd way at times. A good example of this is that my journey to work/home is essentially a main road journey of about four miles to the town centre with no deviation required once into/outside the town centre. I have been testing the unit on this journey and for no apparent reason I am directed into the ‘same’ side road on the ‘out’ and ‘return’ journey. Obviously with local knowledge I know this is wrong so curiosity got the better of me yesterday when I had time on my hands, and I followed the instruction to turn off the main road into the side road. As I was now going the ‘wrong’ direction the unit immediately re-calculated my route to direct me about a quarter of a mile via another side road back to the main road about 200 yards further on from where I had just turned off!
My question is basically is this, is the above likely to be a bug in the supplied software? And if I upgraded to other software mentioned in the forum are there likely to be less errors. I am new to sat navs and wondered if this type of error described above is normal.
Thinking about this some more, a good way of eliminating the software as a cause of route errors is to use Google Earth to plot the same route (under the directions tab).
Given that Google Earth also uses TeleAtlas maps (I would assume the latest available), if it makes the same odd decisions about a route then the problem is in the map data.

Well I have done as DarkMatter suggested in post 695 the interesting thing is that Google Earth says ‘slight turn left’ at the point were the Myguide software tells me to turn left. Now the odd thing is if I reverse the route (starting from work rather than home) on Google Earth, there is no mention of ‘slight turn right’ as I expected at the point were Myguide says ‘turn right’. And these are all of course at the same point on the map whether Google or Myguide. I also did a fly over of the route on Myguide and on closer inspection there is not a turn marked on the map route (at least I don’t think so, I am testing this again tonight) were the voice command says turn left (or right on the way back) so I think if I were to follow the map visually there would be no problem it is just that the voice command says turn at that point. Anyway, no point in getting too bogged down with all this.

This does happen - Instructions such as "Bare Right" often seem to be used as though the SW is not sure if it is a turning or not (ie. staying on this road rather than turning off). Likewise "Turn Right" can some times be used at junctions where actually the road you are on bends right and another road joins from the left. Generally these imprecise instructions don't matter but just occasionally you come across a junction where it can throw you off so it's always better to glance at the map.
Regarding maps - I have found that the Navteq maps used by Destinator are in many cases (well, that I have tested) more accurate than the newer Tele Atlas maps that iGO uses, despite being from Q4 2006.

Yes, I am beginning to realise this now. There is a ‘staggered’ junction with traffic lights on my way home. The voice instructions say turn right then left but to me (armed with local knowledge) this is effectively straight on because the stagger or offset is only about four yards. Now this is clear if you quickly glance at the screen because the route is clearly across this junction. So in an unfamiliar place I think I would pay more attention to the map display.

As a regular cyclist who uses a bike for work, I wondered if anyone has used this on bicycle? It lists BIKE mode but nowhere seems to provide details. The "regular" satnavs for bicycles are a bit geekish and more intended for off-road use - I want one that actually works on real roads to help with my job (carrying out visits to people in Leeds/Bradford area)

This is my customised version which I have really made for myself, but someone else may find it useful. Obviously initially you'll have to live with my colour/icon choices etc. These can be modified if required of course.
This version of the speedcam patch is purely English language only, with two new UK voices and two new US voices over the original. It took me longer than expected to make the 224 sound files for the US voices, but I think it was worth it, as these new ones are much clearer. Only the US voices will speak the kmh speeds + mph speeds in 5mph increments (for the US). The UK voices should speak all speed limits that you will come across in the UK. Also, I've fixed a bug which was preventing speeds being spoken on specs cameras.
For specs cameras (given their somewhat unreliable implementation in the igo code) what I've done is disable the (often wildly inaccurate) average speed part of the warnings altogether, leaving specs cameras to behave like all other camera warnings. So you will get a spoken warning when approaching the start and end cameras in an average speed zone, but no visual average speed warning on the display while 'in the zone'. This method avoids the warning getting 'stuck' on screen as it sometimes had a habit of doing.
To try it just unzip the file, and place the SKIN folder inside your iGo2006 folder on your myguide (same place as lang, maps, poi folders etc). There is no need to unpack the zip files within the SKIN folder. Then just restart and start playing!
To stop using the skin at any time just rename the SKIN folder to oldSKIN (or something similar) or delete it, and reset.

Thanks - your reminder about battery life is actually very helpful - if I am on the road for four or five hours it would probably be a waste of time using the satnav ! I hadn't considered that !

I was thinking about the battery life, but not from the cycling point of view but if I used the Myguide whilst out hiking. Please note, what follows is for discussion only, I have not tried any of this out and I am certainly not suggesting anyone try this.
I was interested to read elsewhere on this forum that it takes about 4 hours to charge using the ‘car’ lead and about 2 hours using the mains adaptor. Both I believe are rated at 5volts and capable of supplying 2 amps.
I was therefore interested to see what charge current the Myguide took on charge so I hooked up the 12v car charge lead to a 12v 3amp power supply that I have, this power supply has a current limit facility so I set this low to be on the safe side. My experiment showed that during charging from nearly flat the Myguide took approximately 300ma for over an hour, this dropped to approx 200ma after a further half hour and was under 50ma after 3 hours or so when the battery would be getting fully charged. I also noted that when the Myguide was switched on the extra current drawn was approximately 150ma however this was indoors not locked onto satellites so it may be higher when fully functioning.
From gmcmen’s post (#252) I see you can get a plug from the electronic components shop were some of the staff wear yellow coats. I plan to get one of these (and a socket to make a lead so I can put my meter in circuit) and measure the current from the mains adaptor to compare, I don’t see why it should be much different but people are reporting the Myguide charges faster from the mains adaptor so it is worth checking out.
I fly model aeroplanes and as such have many 4.8volt rechargeable ‘receiver’ battery packs these are usually made up from 4 AA type NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) cells these are 1.2 volt per cell. So what I am thinking of doing (eventually) is to put one of the above mentioned plugs onto one of these packs to power the Myguide. As these NiMH cells are now typically rated at well over 2000 Ma/hour this would in theory keep the unit going for well over 10 hours.
The thing that puts me off is I do not know how the Myguide handles charging the internal battery, I am assuming it has some sort of inbuilt charging circuit to manage the charging the internal battery but people keep mentioning an ‘LPS’ supply for the 5v external source, I have never come across this term before (LPS) but I am assuming this is some form of current limiting safety feature but I do not know. So, if I do proceed to try a 4.8v pack I will measure/monitor the current again whilst charging and include a fuse in the lead too, this is because NiMH cells have a low internal resistance and can supply a LOT of current in a short period of time so it is best to ere on the safe side.

I have just bought a myguide 3100 from ebuyer and it connected with my pc on the first attempt. I now want to download more detailed maps and speedcam data base but am now unable to get the pc to see the myguide unit.
Looking in device manager is a windows ce usb connection coming and going.
Anyone got any ideas please??:mad:

Thanks for the info gmcmen let’s hope your battery problem is an isolated case, unfortunate though it is. Having read the Wikipedia article I am sure the MyGuide will have electronics to manage the battery charge. It is interesting that yours is a 1250 mAh battery, the box mine came in says 1100 mAh. I wonder if these units have batteries with differing capacities fitted by the manufacturer, this might explain the varying battery life between charges reported.
I remember a few years ago in the early days of these Li-ion cells (not the polymer versions) one of our model club members was experimenting with fast charging one of these cells. He set up a rig to measure voltage, current and temperature. He then started increasing the current slowly whilst monitoring the voltage and temp, as these did not change he carried on inching the current up when suddenly without warning the cell exploded. So, mobile phones, PDA’s, sat navs, etc including the Myguide will have sophisticated battery charging circuits and consequently are quite safe.

DarkMatter;316356]The MyGuide software is just a rebranded version of iGO, so generally speaking they are pretty much the same. The big advantage of switching to the iGO version (and the reason I initially did it) is the fact that you can obtain more up-to-date maps for it, especially given the lack of support from MyGuide. You can do this without touching your original internal software or MyGuide SD card (provided you have a spare SD card) so there is nothing to lose really! It can all be reset to a 'factory state' if for any reason you need to return it, just be popping in the original card and hitting the reset button on the back.
If you do a bit of searching through this forum, many of your questions will be answered
I am keen to try out some of the upgrades mentioned elsewhere in the forum especially getting a media player for videos. I have bought a 2gig SD card to install the software on but what I would like someone with experience to confirm please is if it all goes pear shaped, is it just a simple case of inserting the original supplied SD card and pressing ‘reset’ to restore the unit to its original state? If I have understood correctly (please see quote from Dark Matter) this would be the case.
I have tried backing up the unit but it always fails with one of the files in the Windows directory so I have copied all the directories/files except for the Windows directory to my PC. I am not too sure what activesync does, so I have logged on as a guest rather than a named device but I suspect I should have gone the named device route.

Hi Algebra, restoring to its original state is no problem. It is done using an SD card and the map loader CD that came with the unit. This will only restore the "Flash Disk" to its original, but not the registry if you have edited it manually, then your original SD card will work.
If you just want to load and run stuff from the new SD card there are no problems and nothing permanent will be changed in the unit.

Basically, for most of the things you are likely to want to install, there is no need to alter anything on the flash disk at all.
Step one is to copy the original MyGuide SD card to your new 2 GB card, presuming that you want to continue to have the original maps available in MyGuide. Check that the unit functions correctly with this new card, and then store your original card somewhere safe!
Next step is to put another program to the SD card, and amend the MyGuide menu to run it. To get you started, download this small game, and copy it to a new folder called 'games\Dots' on the SD card.

As a general rule, it's a good idea to hit the reset button on the back of the unit whenever you make changes to the files on the card.

Re ActiveSync - I'm no expert, but I doubt that logging in as a guest would make any difference. You won't be able to backup all of the files from the flashdisk as some will be locked because they are in use. As gmcmen says, in the (unlikely) event that you mess up the flashdisk it can be restored using the map-loader cd.

I've read this forum from message 1 to end and still do not get how to install more maps etc... Will a 1GB sd card be enough and also it is only the street level mapping of france that I wish to get added on as I have the major routes. Going to france this year and the site is somewhat out of the way and the sat nav leaves me 20-25 miles of country roads to navigate without it as the mapping is not detailed enough.
I really need a step by step guide if anyone has one. :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

Hi,
I've read this forum from message 1 to end and still do not get how to install more maps etc... Will a 1GB sd card be enough and also it is only the street level mapping of france that I wish to get added on as I have the major routes. Going to france this year and the site is somewhat out of the way and the sat nav leaves me 20-25 miles of country roads to navigate without it as the mapping is not detailed enough.
I really need a step by step guide if anyone has one. :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:
MyGuide software is not cracked. You need to download a different software and use that software, with updated or different maps.

Ok guys got the downloads for igo and tom etc... getting new sd card on way home. Thanks. Is there any way to change the navigation arrow to a vehicle icon. My father has a garmin and it has a nice icon of a car whilst navigating. Pretty cool looking compared to the myguide arrow.

Depends on which software you decide to go with. If you choose iGO, then I think it is possible to do by using a skin.

Unfortunately, as the site is in a far eastern language, it may be a bit of a shot in the dark. Still that's what makes it fun isn't it...trying to overcome these problems?;)

Just a little note to say thanks to all you clever people on this forum who have enabled me to have three sat nav programmes, a media player and assorted games running on a £75 pound machine.
By the way has anybody got garmin software to run on their machine.

No I don't,my previous sat nav was a garmin i3 which I found very usable and I wanted to have the option of using garmins software on this excellent machine.

Well my reason is because I will be on a trip to Malta later in the year, and currently only Garmin have a map of Malta. I would love to be corrected on this, but it is the only one I can find.

This is my customised version which I have really made for myself, but someone else may find it useful. Obviously initially you'll have to live with my colour/icon choices etc. These can be modified if required of course.
This version of the speedcam patch is purely English language only, with two new UK voices and two new US voices over the original. It took me longer than expected to make the 224 sound files for the US voices, but I think it was worth it, as these new ones are much clearer. Only the US voices will speak the kmh speeds + mph speeds in 5mph increments (for the US). The UK voices should speak all speed limits that you will come across in the UK. Also, I've fixed a bug which was preventing speeds being spoken on specs cameras.
For specs cameras (given their somewhat unreliable implementation in the igo code) what I've done is disable the (often wildly inaccurate) average speed part of the warnings altogether, leaving specs cameras to behave like all other camera warnings. So you will get a spoken warning when approaching the start and end cameras in an average speed zone, but no visual average speed warning on the display while 'in the zone'. This method avoids the warning getting 'stuck' on screen as it sometimes had a habit of doing.
To try it just unzip the file, and place the SKIN folder inside your iGo2006 folder on your myguide (same place as lang, maps, poi folders etc). There is no need to unpack the zip files within the SKIN folder. Then just restart and start playing!
To stop using the skin at any time just rename the SKIN folder to oldSKIN (or something similar) or delete it, and reset.

Dark Matter, I gave this a try and its pretty damn good except that I dont get any camera warnings. Don't worry about the radio button light on the volume bar, it doesn't come on for some reason, but it doesn't affect the warnings.
Are you testing it by actually driving around? The warnings won't sound in simulation mode. Have you copied the four voice zip files into the skin folder? Do you get a spoken message when you cycle through the voice selection options in the 'alerts' menu?
I tend to use the 'spoken warning only' option, so I know that should at least work fine.

Not sure I can offer much help as it was a while ago and I only tried the program for a day before scrapping it (so slow I don't think it ever managed to recalulate a route while I was moving). As far as I can see looking at an old backup I did only what you have done. I was using v6.5.1 For what it's worth here are the settings I used:

ive recieved my my guide, ive got a blank 1gb sd card. how do i go about installing tomtom and igo on it. ive downloaded a file called tomtom_&_igo_on_myguide_3100.rar. do i also need to download the maps for them as well.
where would i be able to get the maps from.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your quick tips that took me only a few minutes to get the MN6 working which I have been working on for the past week. When I follow your changes using baud rate of 38400 instead of 9600 then I got the GSP signal. But still don't understand what makes the difference?
I looked into windows directory, it has SDHC driver. Does it work with 4G SDHC card? It is working well with my 4G SD (non-HC) but not the 8G SDHC card.
Anybody tried to rotate the screen? I tried the Rotate utilitiy from Mio tools and also using Mortscript to rotate but did not work. Any idea?

You need to see what is contained in the .rar file you have downloaded first really. If you need an application to open .rar archives I would recommend 7-zip, which is a free program.

By following the excellent advice from others on this forum I have now managed to get my unit running most of the programs mentioned, in particular the Mp3 and Video using Tcpmp, Media Player and Xvideo. I have almost lost site of the fact this unit is a really a sat nav!!
Tcpmp seems to do everything I need for Mp3 and Video and I may use just this program in the future.
I thought I would share my method for putting Mp3’s and Videos (from DVD) onto the storage card. I am no expert at this and would appreciate it if others have any other techniques of doing this especially compressing the video to keep the file sizes down yet maintaining smooth video.
Mp3’s are fairly straight forward, I simply made a folder on the storage card, selected my favourite tracks and pasted them into this folder and then in Tcpmp made play lists of them e.g. rock, jazz, chill out etc. Or, I can of course play the lot straight as they come, or, random in shuffle mode.
Videos are a little more tricky because as far as I can tell the video has to be extracted from the DVD. To do this I use a freeware program called DVD Shrink which is a program for backing up DVD’s to fit onto a recordable DVD. There are compression settings etc you can use, but so far I have just used the default settings. I use the re-author function of the program to ‘extract’ the video, which has to be identified first, but there is a player built into the program so it is easy to see the file first. You then use the ‘backup’ function which is saves the extracted file into a folder. This file is then used in the next step.
I then use a program called SUPER from eRightSoft to optimise the video for use with the Myguide. SUPER has pre sets for various devices e.g. 3gp for Sony Erikson phones, but again I use the default avi (for pocket pc) and select the video scalable size to be 320 by 240. SUPER can be a bit tricky to use at first so studying the program and features is definitely recommended. You can set up the path to where the encoded video is stored on your PC by right clicking for menu and setting the output file saving management structure. To encode you drag and drop the file extracted obtained using DVD shrink to where it says ‘drop a valid multimedia file here’. Super will then encode it (you may have to click encode). Once done I then re-name the file to something more meaningful, keeping the .AVI file extension. This file I then use on the Myguide by placing it in a folder I create on the storage card e.g. ‘My Videos’
Both of the programs can easily be obtained by doing a Google search on their names.
As an example a 24 minute episode taken off a comedy DVD (Phoenix Nights) was extracted at 834 Mb, once encoded in SUPER as above the file size was 32.8 Mb. The resulting video runs very smooth though you can play around with the parameters in Tcpmp to fine tune (see post 153 from gmcmen) and there are all kinds of bells and whistles for this in Tcpmp for this! The file runs straight off in xvideo and I cannot see any parameters to change in this program.

Sorry, can't help you this time - never had a problem with the screen needing rotating and have never tried a 4gb card (last I heard someone say was that some worked and some not).

Sao161 - As far as I'm aware the Myguide 3100 will only work with SD cards up to 2 Gbyte, some people have claimed that larger cards work but others have reported problems when trying to use bigger cards.
In the 'Sys.txt' file (located in the IGO folder of the Flash disc) there is an option in the [GX] section gx_orientation=0, This may be what you are looking for - but I've never tried changing it.

Ive been looking through these threads and im now getting confused with the sheer amount of information contained here.
Im doing motorbike trip across Europe in June, i have a My Guide 3100. So my questions are:
What software will i need to read all the Euro maps - i hear My Guide isnt cracked and so you need to use another? IGO maybe?
Where do i get this software from?
Where can i get the maps from?
How do i install the new software?
How do i i install the new Euro maps?
Also does anyone have any suggestions of powering one of these from a motorbike?
Is there a weatherproof wallet for it whereby i can still see the screen?

been reading the posts and agree with above, it's huge.
Can someone in the know tell me which route to take.
I just want slightly more updated maps - UK becuase I am having lots of probs with current maps in terms of ending up at the wrong place completely which is giving me a few probs.
Do I go for IGO 2006, IGO 2006 Plus, IG7, IG8 etc or shall I try to put tom tom on etc.
If I download IGO2006 for example should the download include a uk map or does it update itself somehow (wishful thinking probably but never know)
I ask because I am currently download loads of files to get going but I could be wasting a lot of time and effort going down the wrong route and I have no idea if the maps are included or not, it's important my myguide 3100 keeps working or I'll be up s@!t creek without a paddle.

In my opinion the best software is the IGO 2006 plus, It's fast, intuitive and as the Myguide is simply a version of this, it's virtually identical and hence uses the same maps.

If you upgrade the software to IGO 2006 plus and download and install new maps you will also need to download the 'license.db' file that accompanies the maps, the maps are not generally included with software downloads due to the size of each map. Beware with the Europe maps, one includes just the major roads of Europe, if you require more detail download each country.
As for powering the unit from a motorbike, I've no idea, if the bike has a 12 volt supply then the car charger that comes with the 3100 could be modified to work.
The same applies with the waterproof case, I've never seen such a thing but that doesn't mean there isn't one available.

Of late everytime I launch Tomtom it doesn't seem to find any signal. I have to manually go through the settings and then it finds it. The other day the settings were correct and it didn't find any signal at all.
All the other apps work fine igo2006, igo8, igo7. Its just tomtom.
Any ideas??

Although one moe question, i used Active Sync last night to connect to my My Guide, but when i chose 'explore' it opened my mobile device but there was no folders shown, nothing really.
I know ive done this before as ive copied the Speed Cams onto my Guide, but i dont know why for some reason last night i couldnt see any folders using the explore function on Active Snyc?
Anyone have this problem before?

Yes many more maps will fit (France and Germany are two of the biggest and take about 353 Mbytes). Make sure you have 'Cross-border Planning' selected from the SETTINGS - ADVANCED - ROUTE OPTIONS menu.
